Inlays and Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays repair the damaged surfaces of teeth.  Inlays are comparable to fillings as they consist of gold, resin or porcelain to filling the spaces within tooth surfaces.  The end result of inlays is the generation of a new surface that proves strong and reliable.  If damage is not considerable, dental onlays and inlays are sufficient alternatives to dental crowns.  Furthermore, the dentist might also recommend an inlay or onlay instead of a filling as fillings decrease tooth strength while onlays/inlays strengthen them.

Dental onlays are similar to inlays yet extend beyond the tooth’s cusp for expanded overage.  Onlays and inlays at our dental practice in Daytona Beach, FL typically take two appointments to complete.  The initial visit eliminates the damaged section of the tooth.  Impressions of the tooth are made so a customized filling can be added.  A temporary sealant is added to the tooth until the second appointment.  The dentist then adds the only or inlay, optimizing its fit and ensuring it permanently bonds to the surface of the tooth.
